Last Friday, a friend of my mother’s asked me, “Don’t you ever make anything normal and easy, like rice crispy treats?” It made me laugh, because I had in fact made rice crispy treats last Monday, only a few days earlier. I’m not sure they qualify as ‘normal’, though. The inclusion of brown butter and flaky sea salt definitely elevates them into something special and different. But they’re still incredibly fast and easy to make.
Would I give these to kids? Probably not without decreasing the salt. Salty-sweet seems to be an acquired taste combination. The brown butter, though, seems to me like it would be pleasing to all ages. I honestly go through phases where I consider browning all of the butter in my fridge, rechilling it, and then using it normally in every single thing that I make. I haven’t caved yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time.
